At Integrated Dermatology our providers choose to use Sculptra® Aesthetic for its unique ability to restores your skin’s inner structure for a more youthful appearance with natural-looking and long-lasting results.
What makes Sculptra® Aesthetic so unique?
There are many options when it comes to reducing the visible signs of aging but there is nothing quite like Sculptra® Aesthetic. Sculptra® stimulates your skin’s own natural collagen production to increase overall facial volume. This unique non-invasive option helps facial skin naturally regain a more youthful and natural-looking appearance.
Sculptra® Aesthetic is an FDA-approved injectable that helps gradually replace lost collagen — an underlying cause of facial aging — for results that can last more than two years.
Unlike hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, Sculptra® Aesthetic is a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA)- based treatment. Polylactic acid is lactic acid molecules stuck together in strings (a polymer) that is made in a laboratory and contains no animal products and no human DNA. Over time, it very gradually disappears by the action of your own cell enzymes.
Once injected, it begins working deep within the skin to stimulate collagen production, reinforcing the skin’s inner structure and restoring its volume.

Why should I choose Integrated Dermatology for my Sculptra® Aesthetic treatment?
Here at Integrated Dermatology, only Board Certified Dermatologists perform the Sculptra® Aesthetic treatment. Our cost not only includes the price of the product, but more importantly, the skill and expertise of the physician who is administering your treatment.
How does Sculptra® Aesthetic work?
Sculptra is injected by our Board Certified Dermatologists below the surface of the skin, within the deep dermis, where strands of collagen support your skin’s structure to correct shallow to deep facial wrinkles and folds.
Sculptra® Aesthetic provides a gradual increase in skin thickness by stimulating regrowth of you own soft tissue or collagen. Visible results appear within the first few treatment sessions. Sculptra® Aesthetic will not correct the underlying cause of the facial fat loss, but will help improve the appearance by increasing skin thickness in the treated area.
Sculptra® Aesthetic works subtly and gradually over time for a more youthful-looking appearance. Unlike hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, Sculptra® Aesthetic helps stimulate your skin’s own natural collagen production to help restore its inner structure and increase facial volume that has been lost to aging.
Collagen is a key structural component of smooth, healthy-looking skin. As you age, your body’s collagen production decreases. In fact, you lose about 1% of collagen per year after the age of 18. This is when you may start to notice the formation of wrinkles. Luckily, Sculptra® Aesthetic can help, even if decades of collagen loss have already occurred.
Over time, Sculptra Aesthetic helps the body reproduce lost collagen. On average, three injection appointments are needed over a period of a few months. The number of injection appointments and the number of injections per appointment vary from person to person, depending on how much collagen has been lost.

Why should I choose Sculptra® Aesthetic?
Not all treatments or injectables are created the same. Some target different areas of the face, and, more importantly, produce different effects.
Collagen stimulators like Sculptra® Aesthetic are used to diminish facial wrinkles by helping to restore the deep, underlying structure of the skin. Results appear gradually over the treatment regime (typically three injections over the course of three to four months) and can last up to two years.
As a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) collagen stimulator, Sculptra Aesthetic is different. It works with your body within the deep dermis, rather than topically, to help revitalize collagen production and help restore your skin’s inner structure and volume. As the Sculptra Aesthetic PLLA microparticles are absorbed, they help stimulate collagen production. Rebuilt collagen strands begin gradually helping to restore facial volume and the look of fullness to wrinkles and folds. As the Sculptra Aesthetic PLLA microparticles are absorbed, they help stimulate collagen production.
Is Sculptra right for me?
If more than 2-3 syringes of HA are needed, then Sculptra may be more cost effective over time (2-3 years). Only one maintenance treatment a year is typical with Sculptra, while 2-3 maintenance treatments per year are needed with Juvederm.
The best result may be with both Sculptra and Juvederm. Sculptra will re-volumize the cheek area, chin, and temples, and 1 syringe of Juvederm 1-2/year will fill right around the lips where Sculptra can’t go.
Is Sculptra® Aesthetic FDA approved?
In 2009 Sculptra got its full FDA approval for cosmetic use in the United States. It has had partial FDA approval here for over five years. It has been used extensively in Europe for over ten years and is approved in Canada, Europe, and over 20 other countries.
Does Sculptra® Aesthetic treatment hurt?
There is little discomfort with the injections because Sculptra is mixed with lidocaine, which is a local anesthetic. Most offices, including ours, also apply a topical numbing cream before the treatment.
How long does the treatment take?
At Integrated Dermatology, our Board Certified Dermatologists will discuss your treatment goals and perform a facial analysis to determine the appropriate treatments for you. The treatment involves numbing for 30 minutes and the actual injection process takes about 45 minutes.
What will I look like right after the treatment?
Directly after the treatment, there is almost undetectable fullness (from the water in the product) for about two days after a treatment. A little bruising is normal, but it’s usually minimal. You may have mild to moderate swelling at the injection sites which could last up to a week.
To avoid bruising don’t take aspirin, ibuprofen or Aleve (naproxyn) or any other drug which increases bleeding for 1 week prior to your treatment unless required by your doctor.
How long is the recovery time after treatment?
Your physician will tell you what to expect following treatment with Sculptra® Aesthetic. Within the first 24 hours, you should avoid strenuous exercise, extensive sun or heat exposure, and alcoholic beverages. Exposure to any of the above may cause temporary redness, swelling, and/or itching at the injection sites. If there is swelling, you may need to place an ice pack over the swollen area. You should ask your physician when makeup may be applied after your treatment.
Are the results immediate?
No, results are gradual and take 8 to 10 months to see final results. However, we often see early responses within 6 to 8 weeks. This is because you are building your own collagen.
Will I need a follow up?
Sculptra lasts approximately 2 years once the series of treatments is completed. Generally, one maintenance treatment a year is needed so you don’t completely return to your original volume.
Do I need a cosmetic consultation to receive Sculptra® Aesthetic?
Yes, a cosmetic consultation is recommended and required to receive the treatment. During your consultation, our Board Certified Dermatologists will discuss your treatment goals and perform a facial analysis to determine the appropriate treatments for you.
Will I be able to receive the Sculptra® Aesthetic treatment at the time of my Cosmetic Consultation?
You and your provider will discuss your treatment goals and discuss with you the timing of your treatment. For the most part, Sculptra® Aesthetic will not be done at the same day as the visit but sometimes it is case-by-case.
Can I receive Sculptra® Aesthetic when I am pregnant or nursing?
It is not recommended to receive Sculptra® Aesthetic treatment if you are pregnant or nursing.
What are possible side effects?
The most common side effects include tenderness, swelling, firmness, lumps/bumps, bruising, pain, redness, discoloration, and itching. These side effects resolve naturally within 1 to 14 days after the treatment.
A few days after treatment, you may look as you did before the treatment. This is normal and temporary. Sculptra® Aesthetic works to gradually replace lost collagen. Visible results appear within the first few treatment sessions.
Rarely, small visible bumps may develop which can take months or even a year or two to go away. These are usually related to the massage not being done correctly.
If you’ve previously had facial herpes simplex at the injection site, the injection might provoke an outbreak. Talk to your doctor about this before the treatment
Before the Procedure
- Avoid alcoholic beverages at least 24 hours prior to treatment (alcohol may thin the blood, increasing the risk of bruising).
- Avoid anti-inflammatory/blood thinning medication ideally for a period of two weeks before treatment. Medications and supplements such as aspirin, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, St. John’s Wort, ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Aleve, and other NSAIDs are all blood thinning and can increase risk of bruising/swelling after injections.
- Schedule Sculptra® Aesthetic appointment at least 2 weeks prior to a special event which may be occurring, i.e., wedding, vacation, family portrait, etc. It is not desirable to have a very special event occurring and be bruised from an injection which could have been avoided.
- Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your appointment for topical anesthesia of the treatment area.
- Use the 5 x 5 x 5 Rule. Massage the treated area for 5 minutes, 5 times per day for 5 days after your treatment. It is imperative to massage the area as directed to avoid small lumps in the treatment area.
- Within the first 24 hours after your treatment, apply an icepack to the area to reduce swelling and bruising (avoid putting ice directly on your skin).
- You may apply Arnica gel to the area or take oral Arnica if you would like.
- AVOID Aspirin, Motrin, Gingko Biloba, excessive garlic, Flax oil, Cod Liver oil, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, or any other essential fatty acids at least 3 days to 1 week before and after filler treatment.
- AVOID alcohol, caffeine, niacin supplement, high-sodium foods, high sugar foods, refined carbohydrates (you may eat fruit), spicy foods, and cigarettes 24-48 hours before and after treatment.
- Avoid vigorous exercise for 24 hours after treatment.
- Avoid sun and heat exposure until swelling and redness have disappeared.
- No makeup or lipstick until the next day. Earlier use can cause small pustules.
- One side may heal faster than the other side.
- Report any worsening or longer-lasting signs or symptoms to your physician right away.
How much does Sculptra® Aesthetic treatment cost?
Our Sculptra® Aesthetic treatment is priced per vial and the number of vials needed is dependent upon the patient and desired results. A minimum of 3 vials are typically needed.
Each treatment costs approximately $900-$2,700 depending on your age and amount of correction needed. Average is 2-3 treatments about 6-10 weeks apart for the initial “repair” series, depending on your age and the problems you are trying to correct.
However, balancing that cost is Sculptra’s longevity. After the initial series of treatments, usually only 1 treatment is needed per year to maintain the correction. It may be more cost effective in the long run.
